Island Lake Mitigation Area |
Nestled in southwest Seminole County, the Island Lake mitigation parcel is approximately 147 acres of mesic and hydric pine flatwoods, a broad freshwater marsh surrounding mixed wetland hardwood islands and shrub wetlands. The site is generally healthy and provides habitat for numerous wildlife species, including woodpeckers, flycatchers, bald eagles, gnatcatchers, northern cardinals, warblers, and vireos. Other wildlife include fox, opossum, raccoon, various herpetofauna such as banded water snake, green tree frog, oak toad, southern toad, and green anole. Listed or protected species observed on-site are gopher tortoise and Florida sandhill crane, several of which have nested within the freshwater marsh.
Because of its habitat and species diversity, the site can provide much-needed mitigation in the Lake Jesup basin in an area that has experienced significant development. With perpetual management and protection, the site can remain a sustainable island "oasis" for the many species and ecosystems that occur within it, and provide water protection for the St. Johns River and the residents of Seminole County.
